Presented by Kelly Strayhorn Theater

Friday, July 6 | 8 PM

KST welcomes back Point Park graduate Luke Murphy for a weeklong residency to develop Drenched, choreographed by Luke Murphy and performed by Luke Murphy (Ireland/New York) and Carlye Eckert (Portland, OR/ New York City). Drenched focuses on the gulf between expectations and experiences of romance in contemporary society by deconstructing the notions through which we filter relationships. This work-in-development examines the contrast between the ideals that we absorb from literature, media, art, and decades of social rhetoric with the starker realities of co-dependence, lust, desire, vulnerabily, and sensuality.

This is a showing of excerpts of an evening length work to be developed and premiered in 2012. With a multi-channel projection installation by video artist David Fishel, and a haunting soundscape with influences from Eddie Murphy to Elvis Presley, Drenched is a piece of viscerally physical dance theater with a sharp edge and a sharper sense of humour. Luke shares a work-in-progress excerpt at the end of residency at which time the audience is encouraged to share feedback and ask questions.

Performance length: approx. 60 minutes

This project is supported by a 2012 Dance Project Award from The Arts Council of Ireland with additional residency support from DanceIreland, The Duo Multicultural Arts Center and The Dragons Egg.
