We really enjoyed this article from Pittsburgh Quarterly profiling Arthur Ziegler, president emeritus of the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. In his own words, he chronicles his more than 50 years championing historic preservation and restoration throughout the city.
In the piece, he underlines the importance and power of community-driven development and what can go wrong when community development starts from the outside-in:
“Someone latches on to the latest idea, or brings in a consultant, like Robert Moses, and simply buys into a vision coming from the outside. I think that they believe that they are doing the right thing. But they seem to never consider one question: ‘Will this work?'”
