A new era of leadership is taking shape at ELDI. Following Reverend Dr. Patrice Fowler-Searcy’s retirement after more than two decades of service, Lenore Williams has stepped into the role of Board President, with Board Member Chad Restori joining her as Vice President.
An invested East Liberty resident with deep roots in the neighborhood and a strong background in finance, Chad brings a grounded, numbers-savvy perspective to the board. We caught up with him to learn more about his connection to the neighborhood, journey with ELDI, and how he helps guide our organization.
What first motivated you to get involved with ELDI?
Getting involved with ELDI seems like forever ago. I knew I was going to be moving to East Liberty—my family has had a small business there for decades, Bruno’s Garage, an auto mechanic shop. And when I moved in 2013, there was already so much happening with the new developments like Home Depot and Whole Foods. I wanted to be part of what was going on in the community, so I reached out to a few contacts and was connected with ELDI Executive Director Maelene Myers. She asked me to join the East Liberty Community Planning Committee to learn the ins and outs of ELDI. The rest is history—in 2016, Maelene then asked me to join the board. It all started from this desire to be involved in the community that was evolving around me and contributing where I could.
Can you tell us about your professional background and how it shapes your perspective on the board?
I’m a financial advisor with Baird. We do personal financial planning and investment advice. I think that background gives me a different lens than some of the other board members who come from fields like architecture, banking, or the non-profit world. I tend to look at things from a financial perspective—how we’re allocating resources, managing debt, and timing investments. Scott [Editor’s note: Scott Dillon, ELDI Director of Finance and Administration] and Ted [Editor’s note: Ted Melnyk, ELDI Director of Operations] like to tease me because I’m always asking about the debt we’re carrying, but it’s all in good fun. I bring that extra financial perspective to the table so that ELDI can continue to take the calculated risks needed to push the neighborhood forward.
What does it mean to you to step into the role of Board Vice President?
It’s really an honor and a privilege to be asked to serve in this role. I’ve been involved with ELDI for quite a while now, working alongside some very senior board members, so it’s special to take on this next step. My family has now lived in East Liberty for over a decade, and we’re raising three young kids here. It means a lot to help ensure East Liberty continues on the strong trajectory it’s on so my kids can grow up in a vibrant, welcoming community.
What are your hopes for the future of East Liberty?
It’s hard to imagine because what East Liberty looks like now compared to 20 years ago far exceeds what I could’ve pictured as a kid. Back then, when I’d visit my dad at the garage, it wasn’t the safest neighborhood. Now our Ring camera goes off at night because people are walking their dogs. My hope is that East Liberty continues on this path and becomes known not just for new businesses or tech but as an inclusive community for everyone.
What do you feel most proud of when you look at ELDI’s work so far?
I’m proud of the organization and our staff. Even when we don’t get the recognition we deserve or when there’s criticism for decisions people don’t fully understand, our team keeps their heads down and does what’s right for the greater good. That says a lot about Maelene and the staff. Their dedication to doing what’s best for the community, even when it’s not easy, is really admirable.
You’ve been working closely with Board President Lenore Williams. What stands out to you about her leadership?
Lenore’s incredible commitment. She’s the kind of person who will tune into a board meeting while she’s on vacation. That dedication—to the board, the community, and the organization—says a lot. It’s been great serving alongside her, and I’m looking forward to continuing that partnership in our new roles.
